New Orleans music producer arrested for allegedly exposing artist to HIV

A New Orleans music producer has been arrested on a charge of intentional exposure to HIV after an artist whose music he produced alleged that he exposed her to the virus.

Mykel “MykelOnTheBeat” Cook, 33, was booked into the Orleans Justice Center on September 18, according to court records.

Cook was initially held without bond pending a Gwen’s Law hearing before Magistrate Commissioner Joyce Sallah set his bond at $250,000 and issued a domestic protective order for the alleged victim.

He has since been released on bond.

The alleged victim, Jayvonda Bazile, 38, who performs under the name BOG Vonnie, asked NOLA.com to identify her publicly.

Bazile told the outlet that she decided to speak out because she wants people in the music community to take HIV testing seriously and believes other people may have been exposed.

According to the arrest affidavit, Cook met Bazile in 2018 and agreed to help her pursue a music career before eventually becoming her music producer.

Their professional relationship later became personal, with Bazile saying they were casually intimate while continuing to work together on music.

“We became friends, and we weren’t in a relationship, but we were casually hooking up, or hanging out, doing music. Doing work to get us in a better spot in life,” Bazile said.

Cook has reportedly worked on projects involving artists including Boosie BadAzz, Chance the Rapper and NBA YoungBoy.

Court records also show that Cook has previous domestic violence convictions dating back to 2021 and 2023 in St. Charles and Jefferson parishes.

The allegations against Cook remain subject to the ongoing legal process, and a court has not determined his guilt.
